Timeline of television invention 1880s - The television was invented in stages by many talented scientists who each added an important piece that contributed to the finished product.In 1884, Paul Nipkow of Germany proposed and patented the world's first electromechanical television camera. Nipkow proposed a disc camera made up of two-foot diameter metal disks with holes cut into concentric circles. The holes basically cut the picture into lines that could be transmitted one dot at a time. Light sensitive selenium behind the perforated disk would capture the moving image. This camera became known as the Nipkow Disk.
